Fishing The Texas Surf

Surf fishing can be as exciting as it is dangerous.
We caught our first speckled trout more than 30 years ago along a sandbar near Port Mansfield Texas. A 4 or 5 minute battle with several 2 1/2 to 3 pound specks was all it took to hook us on surf fishing and coastal fishing for the rest of our lifes.
Surf fisherman learn to accept what comes with this territory. The unpredictability of surf fishing along the coast is part of the excitement of this sport and the challenges are part of the rewards.

Some time around Memorial Day seems to be the usual time for use to start getting geared up for surf fishing along the coast. The gear we choose will be some of the most basic you will find in the fishing sport. A four wheeler or 4 wheel drive truck a couple of your favorite rods and reels, a few spoons, a few plugs and a few shrimp tails and you're ready to take on the great out doors.
The excitement of not knowing what the next cast will bring has always been part of the thrill of fishing the surf. A gold or silver spoon can be nailed by Redfish, Trout, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Pompano, Jack Crevalle, or maybe even Tarpon. For more than 30 years that special thrill of the strike has claimed a hold of use and perhaps we will get another 30 out of it. With the broad environmental variables which come into play for a surf fishermen in the absence of any one of these, a promising day can turn into a hopeless day. Maybe that is part of the reason why things can get so exciting that on a good day we can forget that surf fishing can also be dangerous.

While surf fishing we must not forget the power of the tides. No matter where you fish currents should be foremost on your mind, but this is especially true near the mouths of passes and river openings.
